Stand
Getting your puppy to stand on command can be very useful particularly for tricky situations when most dogs struggle to keep still and relaxed: grooming, dog shows, and visits to the vet!
Teach your puppy “stand” by starting with a “sit” position. Show him a treat, and then lower your hand a little below his nose—not too low or he will end up lying down. Bring your hand forward, and as the puppy’s nose follows the treat, he will go into a “stand.” Click right away but keep your hand that is holding the treat still, otherwise the puppy will start walking in pursuit of the food. Then give him the treat and lots of praise for a successful “stand.”
Step 1
Start with your puppy in a “sit” position and show him a treat.
Step 2
Carefully drop your hand until just below the puppy’s nose. If you lower your hand too far, the puppy may mistake your hand movement for your “down” signal and lie down.
Step 3
Bring your hand forward very slightly—not too far or the puppy will start to walk. Your hand movement serves merely as a passive guide into the “stand” position. As soon as he is standing, click to confirm that he has done what you wanted.
Step 4
Remember to reward your puppy’s correct responses with treats and praise.
Back to "Basic Training"STAND
Since you started by training your pup to sit, this behavior will be strongly conditioned in him. When teaching ‘stand,” it is not unusual for the puppy to stand when you bring your hand forward, but then automatically resume the “sit.” Be sure that you are completely aware of what the puppy is doing, so that as he stands, you click immediately before he sits again. Continue doing this, and eventually your puppy will discover the connection between the click and the position you are asking of him. Once he finds the “right place” for the click, he will know what to do.
